Govia retain the South Central franchise

On 9 June Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis awarded the South Central rail franchise to Govia. Starting on 20 September 2009, the new franchise will run nominally until July 2015 provided performance benchmarks are met.

Key train service enhancements are to include:
  • four trains per hour on most routes in south London until around 2300 Monday to Saturday and new late night services in south London on Friday and Saturday nights with most routes running trains until 0030
  • additional services in south London on Sundays with four trains per hour on most routes

Good news, but haven't we been here before?
Nine years ago, in their previous and successful bid for the South Central franchise, Govia promised to create a modern high quality rail system with "eight coach trains, running every ten minutes on most routes - creating a genuine "turn up and go service" and doing away with the necessity for timetables”. But that hasn't happened, so what is different this time?

The Sutton Rail Users' Forum was formed in 2002 as an indirect result of a public meeting in the summer of 2000. You can read more of the background to this on the About Us page, where you will also find contact details and information about how you can get involved. The Forum's prime aim is to campaign for the introduction of higher-frequency, regular interval services on a consolidated network across south London. Our Manifesto gives the details, and the on-going results can be found on the Campaign News page.

We also try to highlight day-to-day shortcomings in services too, and believe that travellers in London should see on-going improvements.

The current Thameslink Programme is a large on-going project that promises an increase in capacity and better stations. To keep updated on the Thameslink Programme click on the picture below.

The Sutton Rail Users' Forum typically holds meetings every three or four months. These meetings are open to all, and are usually held in a conference room at the Civic Offices in Sutton. However, as space is limited it is probably advisable for non-members to send an email first to let us know they intend to come. The date of the next meeting is given in the box on the right. A page summarising the notes of previous meetings is also available.

Meanwhile it's an exciting time for transport in Sutton, with the Smarter Travel Sutton project. Find out all about it through the link on the Links page.

We hope you enjoy your visit to this site, and would value receiving your comments!
